Estate, Probate Question?

I had someone living with me for 10 months after splitting up with his wife. He went into a carehome before he died and took many items with him. He has since died and I gave everything he had left here back to his ex-wife (although the divorce wasn't quite final). His blood family is now coming to me wanting items that I don't have and have no idea where they are. He was living in my house for a month by himself right before he went into the carehome. He could have done anything with the stuff, but I don't know what. They are threatening to take me to court. Do they have a case? Should I get an attorney? The things in question total $3000 to $4000 at most.
