My father in law just passed away he did not leave a will. He did not own property like a house or cars.?

We closed every account he had. He has some credit card debt. Do we have to go threw probate still? We are willing to pay the credit cards off for him. Also if we go threw probate will they find accounts that he might have hidden away.
