My husband has passed away - questions about his estate?

My husband passed away 2 months ago. He had a lot of debt to pay off. I'm not well-off, and have 2 kids, 6 and 7. How do I keep the debt-collectors from the life insurance? (according to the insurance policy, I need a probate before I can receive money). I live in Croydon, UK.
